Mythology and Folklore is an elective English course designed to introduce the student to various cultures through an exploration of their mythology and folklore. Students will study the mythology and folklore of classical Greece and Rome as well as Scandinavia, Egypt & Africa, Europe, and North America. Emphasis is placed upon the influence of such works on our own literature, culture, and language. Vocabulary derived from mythology is studied, and modern works based upon and derived from mythological subject matter are read and discussed.
English II is a required course for graduation. It builds upon and reinforces the skills acquired in English I, including genre study, critical reading, language usage and conventions, and effective writing. Additional emphasis is placed upon research skills and oral communication. Importantly, the grade 10 PARCC assessment is a graduation requirement, and this course will prepare students for that major assessment.
