Art, Band, Choir, Dance, and Drama Happenings!

  • March 11: The QACHS Concert Band and QACHS Symphonic Band both traveled to North Dorchester High School in Hurlock to attend the 2020 Maryland District V Band Festival.  This is our annual District Evaluation where we play a warm-up selection, and two other prepared selections that are for evaluation on stage and then move to another room to go through a Sight Reading Assessment.  Both of the groups presented an excellent performance on stage and did an amazing job in sight reading.  The Concert Band received three "Excellent" Ratings for their stage performance, and a "Superior" rating in Sight Reading for an overall "Excellent" rating for the day.  The Symphonic Band received three"Superior" ratings on stage, and a "Superior" rating in Sight Reading for an overall "Superior" rating for the day.  As a result, the Symphonic Band has qualified to attend the Maryland State Band Festival next month!

     Congrats to our musicians!!

We can all be getting a little stir-crazy from social distancing, quarantining, and staying-at-home.  It is very important to keep our morale, physical, and mental health up at a time like this.  Here are some quick and entertaining tips from our staff to take care of yourselves and your families during this crisis.

    • “For those of us with kids, we discovered Cosmic Kids Yoga.  They have videos of different lengths and with different focuses (active vs. calm, etc.)  The girls and I did one where she told the story of The Twits by Roald Dahl while doing yoga.”
    • “Here is a great fun workout for everyone to do alone or in a family. You can learn basic boxing skills (self defense) and get in a great workout.”

    • “Have a 15 second dance party with your family.”

UPDATED: March 31, 2020: Coronavirus Letter

    March 31, 2020

    Dear Parents and Caregivers,
To begin, I want to thank you for all that you have done and continue to do to support your
child’s learning at home. The past two weeks have presented challenges that could not have been
predicted. We have been able to address some issues, but many questions remain. As we enter
our third week of the school closure, it is clear that the coronavirus (COVID- 19) pandemic has
stifled business as normal. I ask for your patience as we continue to encounter the unknown.
Even in the face of uncertainty, I am confident that we will get through this together.
Yesterday, Governor Hogan issued a Stay-at-Home Order, which states that "No Maryland
resident should be leaving their home unless it is for an essential job or for an essential reason
such as obtaining food or medicine, seeking urgent medical attention or for other necessary
purposes." Governor Hogan’s Stay-at-Home order includes provisions which allow Marylanders
to leave their place of residence when (among other things):
    ● Traveling to and from an educational institution for purposes of receiving meals or
    instructional materials for distance learning.
The Stay-at-Home order allows parents and caregivers to continue to pick up Grab N’ Go meals
at any one of the twelve meal distribution sites and travel to schools to pick up learning materials
for students who need them. The QACPS Continuity of Learning Plan is attached and linked
here. It contains information to support parents and students as learning continues at home, as
    well as frequently asked questions.
As always, your support and patience are greatly appreciated. If you have questions regarding
an issue pertaining to the school closures, please submit your questions to the QACPS School
Closures Team at questions@qacps.org. We will check for your questions and respond daily.

    Stay healthy,

    Andrea M. Kane, Ph.D.
    Superintendent of Schools
