Sudlersville Elementary School Eagle Squad
Building Leadership, Teamwork, and Patriotism
Director: Mary W. Leventhal, Ed.D.
Drill Instructor: Den Leventhal
The S.E.S. Eagle Squad is our school drill team and color guard that opens special programs and assemblies on behalf of the school community. Made up of 13 third and fourth grade students, Squad members represent models of good citizenship and learn drill team routines and color guard protocol. Practices are every Friday afternoon, beginning right after school until 3:45 pm.
S.E.S. Eagle Squad members are chosen on the basis of parental support, teacher recommendations, an interview process, and their performance in the drill team exercises during competitive tryouts in September.
The S.E.S. Eagle Squad is the only elementary school drill team and color guard in the state of Maryland. The squad was founded in 2010 as a result of the Sudlersville Elementary School sister school partnership with Escuela Primaria Juventino Rosas, in Tres Valles, Mexico. Fifth and sixth grade students in Mexican public schools form color guards to display the colors for daily morning exercises. When Mrs. Leventhal visited our S.E.S. sister school in Mexico, she returned to Sudlersville with the plan to develop our own S.E.S. color guard and drill team. Mr. Den Leventhal, a USMMA graduate, has been a U.S. Naval Reserve Officer and a U.S. Merchant Marine Officer with experience in military drill. He has been the Eagle Squad’s instructor since its inception.
