Deon Passalaqua’s Biography

I am Matapeake Elementary’s new school counselor, Mrs. Deon Passalaqua (Mrs. P). I know I have big shoes to fill with the retirement of Mrs. O’Connor, and I bring on that challenge with excitement. I previously worked as a school counselor in Charles County (4 years), Washington, D.C. (2 years), and Wilmington, DE (1 year). Before becoming a school counselor, I worked for 8 years, as a social worker with child protective services. I graduated from the University of Delaware with a Bachelor’s in Psychology, and received my graduate degree from the Wilmington University, in School Counseling.

I have been married for almost two years, and can’t wait to have children of my own. In the meantime, I spend a lot of time with my cousins, enjoy reading, and try to travel as much as possible. When I’m not doing those things, I still enjoy watching my favorite soap opera (The Young & the Restless).

My mission is to assure the healthy and whole development of every child so that each has the knowledge, skills, and resiliency to be successful in a rapidly changing world. I am fully committed to this mission and look forward to working with students, staff, family, and friends to achieve this goal.

I might be one of the first people you meet at Matapeake Elementary School, as I register all new families. It is always a pleasure to welcome new families to our school. Some of the many tasks that I do are visit classrooms, run small need based groups, and meet with individual students to help solve problems. There may be some things that require an outside agency for the best possible solution, which I can assist you to find. I also, coordinate our Character Counts program, and I am Student Council Advisor. I oversee and organize many other programs in our school that support our students and their families and benefit the community.

I hope that you will not hesitate to give me a call or send me an e-mail should you feel I can help you or your child in any way.

You can reach me at, or you may contact me at 410-643-3105 x 1107. Please feel free to call me Mrs. P!
