School Safety & Security

QACPS takes a collaborative approach to implement prevention & awareness programs and to assist students when emergencies occur. Some of the outside agencies involved in this collaborative partnership include:

  • Queen Anne’s County Sheriff’s Office
  • Centreville Police Department
  • Maryland State Police
  • Queen Anne’s County State’s Attorney Office
  • Queen Anne’s County Department of Emergency Services

The Queen Anne’s County Sheriff’s Office School Resource Unit is integral in this collaboration. School Resource Officers (SROs) are fully sworn, uniformed Deputies funded by the Queen Anne’s County Sheriff’s Office who are assigned to Kent Island High School, Queen Anne’s County High School, Centreville Middle School, Matapeake Middle School, Stevensville Middle School, and Sudlersville Middle School. SROs who are assigned to a middle school are responsible for elementary schools that feed into the middle school. Centreville Police Department is responsible for providing law enforcement coverage to ARISE Academy, Centreville Elementary School, and Kennard Elementary School.

SROs are trained in emergency preparedness, crisis management, community police concepts, and problem-solving. They work as liaisons to QACPS. Additional responsibilities include serving as a mentor, instructor, and positive role model to students.

SROs wear the complete uniform, including all issued equipment for patrol deputies while on duty at his/her assignment.  All SROs have completed the Maryland Model School Resource Officer Training that is required training approved by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission. Queen Anne’s County Sheriff’s Office School Resource Officers have also completed the National Association of School Resource Office (NASRO) Basic Training Course.

Every School Resource Officer strives to work closely and cooperatively with the school’s teachers, guidance counselors, and administrators. School Resource Officers are not used to enforce QACPS policies, rules, regulations, and/or procedures but will assist as permissible by law. Any enforcement actions will be taken in accordance with appropriate laws, policies, and procedures at the Federal, State, County, and Local levels as appropriate.

The Queen Anne’s County Sheriff’s Office Support Services Lieutenant, or his/her designee, is the department’s primary liaison with Queen Anne’s County Public Schools.  Anyone with questions regarding the School Resource Officer’s duties or responsibilities can inquire further at the QACPS Central Office at 410-758-2403.
