CENTREVILLE — Listen Now: “ArtScene | the Podcast” hosts a creative glimpse into the world of QACPS’ Kennard Elementary School Media Specialist Heather Gray, airing now on Spotify and: anchor.fm/artscene

One step inside the Media Center at Kennard Elementary is like entering a wonderland of abundant creativity. Within Heather Gray’s library you will find: Makerspace stations for ‘hands-on’ learning experiences, Creativity Zones, ‘Book Tastings’, Gingerbread making STEAM contests, a Lego wall—and a student-created mural to celebrate “International Dot Day” on September 15th of each year.
Inspired by “the Dot” book by Peter H. Reynolds, this collaborative school-wide movement has become a beloved tradition for Heather Gray at Kennard Elementary, filling the back walls of her Media Center every year. It serves as one of her favorite projects to initiate at the beginning of the school year, fostering positive relationships and a sense of community among the students.

“Mrs. Gray has brought experiential activities that foster creativity, choices, cooperative learning and so much more,” shared Principal Michelle Carey. “Our KES Tigers are lucky to have her in our Media Center!!”
Gray’s expertise in Arts Integration and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, ART, and Mathematics) has helped her transform the library into the 21st Century learning hub of the school.
After finalizing the ‘Dot Day’ mural and displaying it, Gray will involve students in the annual Statewide Conflict Resolution Day Bookmark Art Contest. Last year, Evelynn Cook received an Honorable Mention award at the state level in the 3 – 5 Category, and Gray hopes to have more state winners this year. Additionally, Gray has begun delivering presentations at local, state, and national levels alongside her colleagues, emphasizing the role of student choice in igniting student motivation. This episode is a must-listen for art enthusiasts and Media Arts innovators, so be sure to tune in!
