CENTREVILLE, MD—On May 1st—the same day as ArtScene, the annual K–12 QACPS student art show from 5–8 p.m. at Kent Island High School—ArtScene | The Podcast proudly features Allison Dorsey, a deeply creative and inspiring art teacher who has been shaping young minds through the power of art since 2007. Currently teaching PreK through 2nd grade at Kent Island Elementary School, Dorsey brings over sixteen years of classroom experience, along with a background in graphic design and visual communication.
In this heartfelt episode, host Michael Bell explores Dorsey’s journey from federal design work to the vibrant, laughter-filled art room she now leads. Listeners will hear how Dorsey blends play, picture books, and meaningful mantras to build confidence and creativity in her youngest students—creating what she calls an “embodied joy” in the process of making.
“Allison has this rare gift of making everyone—students, colleagues, even her own kids—feel encouraged and capable of creating something meaningful,” said QACPS Fine Arts Supervisor Michael Bell. “Her story is full of honesty, humor, and she’s all heart.”
This episode also highlights Dorsey’s role supporting district-wide exhibits like ArtScene, her thoughtful use of children’s literature in art lessons, and the way she integrates art and literacy to engage students in big ideas. She also reflects on how her upbringing and commitment to personal growth have shaped her as both an educator and a human being.

Listeners will also hear how her passion for team sports—including rec soccer and pickleball—fuels the same sense of play and presence she brings into the classroom every day.
From navigating perfectionism to finding strength in vulnerability, Dorsey’s episode is a reminder that creativity doesn’t always begin with talent—it begins with trusting the process, growing through encouragement, and having an open heart.
