CES Students Create Outdoor Mural With Support From QAC Arts Council

CENTREVILLE, MD— Centreville Elementary School (CES) is now home to a vibrant new mural, thanks to the creative efforts of second grade students, art teacher Jennifer Mariano, and a continued partnership with the Queen Anne’s County Arts Council. This marks the third student-created mural at CES, all made possible through generous grant funding from the Arts Council.

This year’s mural project was inspired by the iconic Tree of Life motif found in the work of Gustav Klimt and other artists. As part of their art curriculum, second graders explored various interpretations of the Tree of Life before creating their own versions using Sharpie markers and metallic crayons. Each student also worked alongside visiting artist Susan Mayberry—who has partnered with CES for several years—to design a unique leaf or flower featured in the large-scale outdoor mural.

“The students were so excited to contribute to something lasting,” said Mariano. “It was a meaningful way for our second graders to leave their creative mark at CES before moving on to Kennard Elementary.”

“The kids loved it,” added Principal Theresa Farnell. “It really brightens the playground area.”

The mural has received enthusiastic praise from students, staff, and families alike.

Under Mariano’s leadership and Mayberry’s guidance, CES has seen a transformation through student-designed murals. In addition to the new outdoor piece, a mural of student handprints lines the hallway near the cafeteria, and another features butterflies scattered across the walls of the media center.

“Murals have transformed CES over the years, and Mrs. Mariano continues to receive incredible feedback on the artwork being created,” said Michael Bell, Supervisor of Fine Arts. “We’re also grateful to Rick Stritmatter and the Queen Anne’s County Arts Council for making projects like these possible. They’ve been an outstanding partner of ours for many years.”

Dr. Kibler also shared his appreciation for the new mural, stating, “It’s such excellent work! I’m so impressed by Mrs. Mariano and our students. I love getting to see the mural when I pick up my kids after school and visit CES.”
