Mrs. Mamas

I grew up in Up-State New York, California, and Maryland (mostly).  My father was in the military so we moved around; however, we have been in Maryland for the largest part of my life.  I have always been interested in “business,” as a little girl.  I had a Barbie store not mansion and my mom said I often hummed or sang the jingles from commercials.

I graduated in 1992 from Glen Burnie High School where I fell in love with the subject of Business.  My Marketing & Accounting teachers were very influential and it seemed to come easily to me.

I attended Anne Arundel Community College and transferred to Alleghany Community College where, in 1994, I graduated summa cum laude with my Associates in Business Administration.  Just one day after graduation I started at Frostburg State University as a Business Education Major.  I fell in love with the subject of Management and Leadership, Marketing, and Microeconomics.  I was a member of Alpha XI Delta and an honors student.   I graduated magna cum laude with my Bachelors in 1995.

I was immediately hired by Kent County to run Chestertown Middle School’s computer lab.  My responsibilities included a curricular review program for Math, Reading and Spelling remediation.  I wrote a schedule and program to teach touch typing (5th-8th) and basic word processing, spreadsheets, and database use to 7th and 8th graders.

When Queen Anne’s County announced they were building a new “career oriented” high school, I applied and was hired as part of the opening staff in 1998.  This is my 21st year at Kent Island High School and I have taught:  Computer Technology, Computer Applications I & II, Principles of Business Administration & Management, Principles of Marketing, Advanced Marketing, Personal Finance, Business Law, Introduction to Graphic Arts, and Yearbook Design & Publishing, and was the Work Based Learning Coordinator for three years.  My professional responsibilities also include:  BUC Stop (school store) Operator, DECA/FBLA Advisor, Yearbook Advisor, Budget Committee Chair, Faculty Advisory Chairman, and member of the School Improvement Team.

Since coming to KIHS I have:  continued my education at Wilmington University with a Masters in Human Resource Management, Towson University completing a program in Teaching Financial Management to Teenagers, and University of Maryland Eastern Shore completing the Certificate for Work Based Learning Coordinator, gotten married (2003) to a Greek man from Lancaster, PA, had our daughter Kaliope (2003), was named Maryland State Business Teacher of the Year (2003), was a finalist for Queen Anne’s County Teacher of the Year (2003), had our first son Stavros (2004), had our second son Vasili (2009), and our third son Yiannis (2014).

My personal philosophy of education is to educate and excite students about the theories, foundation, and functions of business while helping each student understand and become a contributing member of our socio-economic system.  I want students to have an understanding of business principles, how they are utilized in various fields as well as in everyday life, and to help them be prepared for further study and practical application in their own lives.
