On January 23, 2024, the Maryland State Board of Education approved Queen Anne’s County Public Schools (QACPS) request for approval of a waiver to use President’s Day, February 19, 2024 as a day of instruction for students.
During the creation of the 2023-2024 school year calendar and approval last winter, QACPS built two holiday inclement weather contingency days into the board approved calendar (Martin Luther King, Jr. Day & President’s Day), and included two additional days embedded at the end of the school year for potential weather related make-up days.
QACPS was closed for inclement weather days on January 10, and January 16, 2024. We are not certain what the remaining weeks of winter may bring. Utilizing February 19, 2024 as a day of instruction leaves one additional inclement weather day in our calendar, and will hopefully prevent the need to extend the school year in June for staff and students.
The State requires schools to be open for 180 days of instruction. QACPS can petition for a waiver of the required 180 days only after efforts have been made to make up the instruction.
