KENT ISLAND — A teacher from Queen Anne’s County Public Schools has been named one of three state finalists for the 2024 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST). Ms. Lisa Herckner, a third-grade teacher at Grasonville Elementary School, has been selected as an outstanding candidate for this National Award by a State Selection Committee.

Each state is permitted to select up to three excellent teachers each year to the National Selection Committee. The White House will announce the recipient of the Presidential Award later this spring.

Ms. Herckner remarked, “This journey caused me to reflect deeply on my teaching practice and my students, and I concluded that the students are the teachers who caused me to dig deeper, and use all my knowledge and resources because I know that everyone can learn math. This process became a catalyst to refine who I am professionally, as a colleague, and as a mathematician.”

Mrs. Amy Smith, QACPS Mathematics Supervisor of Curriculum and Instruction, commented, “Ms. Herckner is always exploring new ways to engage her students and foster discussions to deepen their understanding of mathematics. Her students exhibit enthusiasm for learning mathematics because she involves them in a variety of mathematical activities.”

Ms. Becky Tubman, Principal at Grasonville Elementary, shared, “I am thrilled with Ms. Lisa Herckner’s selection as a 2024 Maryland PAEMST. Mrs. Herckner continually demonstrates extensive content knowledge and understanding of state standards and instructional materials, including curriculum. She creatively and meaningfully highlights key concepts and ideas, using them as the foundation to connect other powerful ideas. Her pacing and differentiation ensure that all students are engaged and supported.”

The teachers were initially nominated by a supervisor, principal, fellow teacher, or students for this award. Teachers then can choose to accept the nomination and begin the application process for the award. Throughout this process, the teachers need to videotape a lesson and analyze their teaching strategies and their professional learning and growth over the years. Teachers who apply for this award undergo a rigorous recommendation and reflection process. Teachers’ applications are reviewed by statewide Mathematics Leaders and evaluated on their teaching practices, proven results for students, professional growth, and leadership in Mathematics.

Queen Anne’s County Public Schools is proud to have a teacher selected this year by the state review team.
