KIES Celebrates Women’s History Month

Women’s History Month began as Women’s History Week in 1980 when President Jimmy Carter issued a Presidential Proclamation that created it. On March 27th, Kent Island Elementary welcomed 6 prominent businesswomen to our school in celebration of Women’s History Month. Among our guests were Queen Anne’s County Public Schools Superintendent, Dr. Patty Saelens. Dr. Saelens was joined by local physician, Dr. Deon Edger-George, Beauty Shop Supply Owner, Mrs. Thuong Do, Onyx Barber Shop Owner, Kay Bowser, Retired Education and Community Leader, Mrs. Sandra Butler, and Deputy First Class Johnston as guests to our 2nd-grade classrooms. After enjoying refreshments, guests were welcomed by two classroom ambassadors. Once in the classroom, students asked interview-style questions to gather information about their guest’s profession, what inspired her toward the profession, the women who inspired them, as well as other inquiries. The day was a great success with lots of positive feedback from students, teachers and our distinguished guests!
