STEVENSVILLE, MD – Students at Bayside Elementary School got an early taste of Pi Day on March 12, 2026, when members of Kent Island High School’s Mu Alpha Theta chapter, led by KIHS teacher Kristine Plocek, visited to lead hands-on math activities for students in grades 3-5.
The afternoon was filled with discovery as each grade level dove into the mysteries of Pi through age appropriate investigations. Third graders explored the relationship between circumference and diameter using a plate, then channeled their inner architects by creating skyline drawings inspired by the digits of Pi. Fourth graders took a similar measurement-based approach before putting their new knowledge to the test in a spirited “Pi Race,” working through 12 math problems in friendly competition. Fifth graders gathered in the cafeteria for a full Pi Day experience, measuring circles, crafting beaded necklaces that encoded the digits of Pi, and competing to see who had committed the most digits to memory.
This event was the largest Mu Alpha Theta has undertaken in recent years and was a huge success! The visit gave elementary students a chance to engage with mathematics in a creative, hands-on way, while the high school volunteers gained valuable experience as mentors and educators.
