Dr. Jennifer Osborne, Reading Specialist at Matapeake Elementary School, shared her literacy expertise at this year’s SoMLA conference held from April 3rd-5th in Towson, Maryland. The conference theme was “Bridging Young Readers to Forever Readers”.
In a session titled “Bridging Scripted Curriculum to Students’ Needs”, Dr. Osborne’s primary focus was how teachers can support students who receive reading intervention (i.e. additional support in meeting their reading goals). She shared strategies and approaches teachers can use to scaffold instruction for these students. Additionally, Dr. Osborne highlighted how teachers can activate prior knowledge and provide students with choices in activities and text selections. Finally, she presented ways to ensure small group instruction is effective and efficient while simultaneously building students’ confidence.
Dr. Osborne is a National Board Certified Teacher as well as a LETRS facilitator. She also serves as the Recording Secretary for the state board of directors of SoMLA as well as the Upper Shore Literacy Chapter co-chair.

Mrs. Bridget Passyn, ELA Curriculum & Instruction Supervisor for grades 3-12 shared, “Dr. Osborne is one of the most dedicated, conscientious, passionate educators with whom I have ever worked. She is fully committed to helping all students meet and exceed their literacy goals. We are so proud her expertise is recognized at the state level and are thrilled she was able to share strategies and ideas with peers from around the state at SoMLA. QACPS is lucky to have Dr. Osborne and we congratulate her on a job well done!”
