QACPS Educator Mrs. Tickler Presents at the 2024 State of Maryland Literacy Association (SoMLA) Conference

Mrs. Alice Tickler, a 2nd Grade Teacher at Church Hill Elementary School, shared her literacy expertise at this year’s SoMLA conference held from April 3rd-5th in Towson, Maryland. The conference theme was “Bridging Young Readers to Forever Readers”.

Mrs. Alice Tickler presented a session titled, “Big Words Don’t Scare Me!”.  She discussed the need for direct instruction in syllabication (the division of words into syllables)  and morphology (the study of words and their parts such as prefixes and suffixes) to help children apply their phonics skills to larger multisyllabic words.  Mrs. Tickler presented ways that teachers can explicitly teach children to chunk larger words into smaller decodable parts in ways that are fun and engaging.

Mrs. Tickler is a National Board Certified Teacher. She is a LETRS facilitator for Queen Anne’s County and is the Membership Director for Upper Shore Literacy Chapter.
