A Letter to the Community from Dr. Kane
Greetings QACPS Families and Employees,
Happy Spring! I am grateful the snow is behind us and we can look forward to April showers and May flowers. After our March 1 snow day, QACPS stands at one day beyond the three snow days we embedded in our district calendar for the school year. School Boards are authorized to extend the school year up to five days beyond June 15 without approval from the State Board of Education. The last day of school for students and teachers was scheduled for Friday, June 14, 2019. With the addition of the fourth snow day, our revised last day of school is planned for Monday, June 17, 2019, contingent upon our county Board of Education’s approval.
I hope you have been following all of the good news about our schools over the past few months. Here’s a recap:
Installation of new turf fields at both high schools will begin on or about June 1 after graduation ceremonies. Our County Commissioners proposed, approved, and funded the turf fields in February 2019. The QACPS School Board approved the turf fields at its March meeting. Many of ourstudent ateletes have expressed their enthusiasm for the turf fields. They believe the turf fields will help to minimize the dangers of playing on muddy fields after a rain, allow them to be more competitive, and ultimately more successful.
On March 6, 2019, the QACPS School Board approved the FY2020 Budget Request, which reflects an increase of $4.4M or just under 4.5% over the FY2019 approved Operating Budget. The FY2020 Budget Request was presented to the County Commissioners on March 19. The budget requests are aligned to the priorities identified in the budget survey and our strategic plan.
The new requests include:
8.5 staffing positions
4 teacher positions (1.0 BES, 1.0 CMS, 1.0 KES, 1.0 KIHS)
3 classroom teacher positions - over-hires created to reduce class sizes at KES, STMS, and QACHS for FY19
1.5 new positions – Virtual Academy Pilot
Additional requests include increases to compensation for substitute teachers and home hospital teachers, transportation, facilities maintenance & security, and small increases for curriculum and equity. You may access the FY2020 Budget Request online.
I am counting on your support of the FY2020 budget requests for teaching positions, transportation, facilities maintenance, security and programs, which impact your child/children directly. Now is the time to speak up. Next school year will be too late.
The dates for the County Commissioners’ public hearings are listed below. Please plan to attend at least one public hearing and demonstrate your support of the QACPS FY2020 Budget.
April 22 7:00 PM Commissioner’s Hearing - Bayside Elementary School
April 23 7:00 PM Commissioner’s Hearing - Liberty Building
April 24 7:00 PM Commissioner’s Hearing - Sudlersville Middle School
Great things are happening in QACPS! Thank you for all you do every single day to support our students and employees.
