    Important Updates

    Sickness:  Click HERE to view the Updated COVID Guidelines for QACPS.  It is important that students who are experiencing any symptoms of COVID, the flu, are feeling ill, are vomiting, or have a fever are kept home.  In short, if students are sick, they should stay home.  Questions about this should go to Nurse Houseknecht (rebecca.houseknecht@qacps.org) or Mr. Watkins (robert.watkins@qacps.org).  If you are not sure, please keep your child at home and contact us.  Thank you for your cooperation!

    Masks - Thank you for speaking with your child about wearing their mask correctly (over mouth and nose) while at school and on the bus!  Our staff will continue to reinforce the mask rule this week.  We are all in this together and we need to work together to keep students at SMS. 

    QACPS Budget - QACPS is asking for input on the 2022-2023 budget.  Click HERE to complete the survey.  It is due by January 17th.

    Explorer Lab - We are excited to announce a partnership with Learning Undefeated.  Earlier this year, we applied for and received a grant to bring a Mobile STEM Lab called Explorer Lab to SMS.  It arrived yesterday!  Click HERE to see a picture in the SMS parking lot!  Next week each 5th, 6th, and 7th grade student will participate in a lesson on the Explorer Lab.  Click HERE to see a short video of the Explorer Lab.  The lesson is about 45 minutes long.  5th grade students will participate as part of their class.  6th and 7th grade students will participate as part of their science class.  Students will be escorted to the Explorer Lab parked at SMS and monitored by SMS staff.  Masks will be worn while on the bus.  In case you were wondering….students are using technology to redesign a MARS Rover and program movement in a simulation on MARS.

    Quarter 2 Report Cards:  The end of Quarter 2 for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students is January 20th.  EVERYONE should check their grades and make sure that you are working to earn a good grade!  DO NOT wait until the last minute to improve your grade….start now!   

     

    6th, 7th, and 8th grade parents:  Remember that you can follow your child’s performance by accessing the Parent Portal.  Click HERE to access the Parent Portal and use your child’s QACPS log in to access grades.  If you need your child’s log in information please contact karla.altamirano@qacps.org.  If you need help, call us at 410-438-3151. 

    Lead Water Testing:  Water testing was conducted at SMS in November.  Click HERE to view the report titled: “Important Notice: Elevated Lead Water Sample Results.  In short, there were 4 sinks that had higher levels of lead in the water.  All of the water filling stations met state requirements.  Check out the report for more information.

    8th Grade

    To 8th Grade Parents:  Believe it or not….your 8th grader has just 5+ months left in middle school!  Be on the lookout for high school scheduling information in the coming weeks.

     

    We are assembling an 8th Grade Parent Committee to discuss plans for end of year festivities.  Given the current situation, nothing is certain, but we would like to begin planning for ways to celebrate the end of middle school for our 8th graders!  The first meeting of the 8th Grade Parent Committee will be held on Thursday, January 13th @ 7pm in the Cafeteria at SMS.  Mrs. Melissa Quillen will serve as Chairperson for this committee.  If you have questions, you can email her at mquillen@baybroadband.net     

     

     

    Character Counts!

    Due to COVID Protocols, the Character Counts Program has been delayed.  As a result, the meeting scheduled for Thursday, January 13th at 6pm in the SMS cafeteria is CANCELED. We will follow-up with a new date as soon as we can.

    Covid Testing

    COVID testing is available for SMS students.  Testing is provided for SMS students that are experiencing COVID like symptoms and is administered by the school nurse.  Click HERE to view the FAQ about COVID Testing in QACPS.  

     

    In order for your child to be eligible for this program, they must be pre-registered.  You can register your child HERE.  The registration will take less than a minute to complete.  During the registration process you will be able to select how you would like to receive the results (phone or email), should your child need to be tested.

    Title 1 Right to Know - This letter lets you know about your right to request information about the qualifications of classroom staff working with your child and information about student assessments given during the school year.

    Actualizaciones importantes

    Máscaras - ¡ Gracias por hablar con su hijo sobre el uso correcto de la máscara (sobre la boca y la nariz) en la escuela y en el autobús!     Explorer Lab : nos complace anunciar una asociación con Learning Undefeated. A principios de este año, solicitamos y recibimos una subvención para llevar un laboratorio STEM móvil llamado Explorer Lab a SMS. ¡Llegó ayer! ¡Haga clic AQUÍ para ver una imagen en el estacionamiento de SMS!  La próxima semana, cada estudiante de quinto, sexto y séptimo grado participará en una lección en el Laboratorio Explorer.  Haga clic AQUÍ para ver un video corto del Laboratorio Explorer. La lección dura aproximadamente 45 minutos. Los estudiantes de quinto grado participarán como parte de su clase. Los estudiantes de sexto y séptimo grado participarán como parte de su clase de ciencias. Los estudiantes serán acompañados al Laboratorio Explorer estacionado en SMS y monitoreados por el personal de SMS. Se usarán máscaras en el autobús. En caso de que se lo esté preguntando ... los estudiantes están utilizando la tecnología para rediseñar un MARS Rover y programar el movimiento en una simulación en MARS.

    Boletas de:  calificaciones del segundo trimestreEl final del segundo trimestre para los estudiantes de sexto, séptimo y octavo grado es el 20 de enero. ¡TODOS deben revisar sus calificaciones y asegurarse de que están trabajando para obtener una buena calificación! NO espere hasta el último minuto para mejorar su calificación… ¡comience ahora!   

     

    Padres de los grados 6, 7 y 8: recuerden que pueden seguir el desempeño de su hijo accediendo al Portal para padres.  Haga clic AQUÍ para acceder al Portal para padres y utilice el registro de QACPS de su hijo para acceder a las calificaciones.
