About Us

at Sudlersville Middle School

Sudlersville Middle School (SMS) is one of four middle schools within the Queen Anne’s County Public School system, which houses approximately 450 students in grades five through eight. Our school provides an excellent educational experience for students who live in several communities including Sudlersville, Church Hill, Barclay, Crumpton, Ingleside, Templeville, and portions of Marydel, Millington, and Chestertown.

SMS benefits from the resources of a School-wide Title I School. The students and staff continue to implement the supports offered as a PBIS/SWIFT school. Through our collaboration with Washington College, SMS has the distinction of being a Professional Development School with all the supports that are afforded through this professional relationship with this highly regarded college.

Our vision

The SMS faculty provides rigorous, relevant curriculum and builds relationships with students to promote intrinsically motivated, persistent learners who achieve mastery in all content areas.

Our Mission

The mission of SMS, a high performing public school, is to ensure that our students demonstrate excellence and are empowered to grow intellectually, physically, emotionally, and socially, as they transition to successful high school students; this will be accomplished through a partnership with our students, our families, and our community, a rigorous curriculum, excellence in teaching and challenging educational experiences that is evidenced through student mastery in all content areas.

Our History

SMS’s origins date back to Sudlersville High School, which opened its doors in 1914. Twenty students enrolled in that first year. In 1941, a new building was completed on North Church Street. Two wings were added in 1950 to accommodate a growing student body. With the completion of the new Queen Anne’s County Comprehensive High School located in Centreville, the old Sudlersville High School began operating as a middle school, beginning with the 1966-67 school year and ending with the opening of the current middle school in May 2012.

The current SMS building houses approximately 450 fifth through eighth grade students and 63 staff members. The school was constructed on a 40-acre lot at a cost of $23 million. It immediately earned the rare and coveted Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Gold (LEED) Certification. SMS was built to be at the forefront in energy efficiency, low environmental impact, and productive atmosphere for learning. The school features geothermal and solar energy capabilities, daylight harvesting, minimal water run-off, high efficiency lighting, superior insulation. SMS truly is “where Green gets the GOLD!”

Walking After School

Do you WALK from SMS after school?  This is a friendly reminder that students must have family permission to walk off school property after school. If your child currently walks each day or if it is one time thing, we must have a note from the family. Please send in a note if this pertains to you. If you would like to use our note, you can access it HERE. Questions should be sent to dawn.coursey@qacps.org.

8th Grade News

We are about five months away from our 8th graders moving to high school. During the final months, there is a lot of information to learn and share. We have been hard at work coordinating with QACHS to make sure our Thunderbirds are ready for high school.

As we finish the year, there are MANY opportunities for parents to volunteer. Our 8th Grade Parent Committee has been hard at work raising money to offset the cost of the many end of year activities. WE NEED YOUR HELP to continue this work. If you are interested in supporting the 8th grade, please contact the Committee Chairperson, Ms. Knolene Johnston (knolene.johnston@qacps.org).
