Staff Inclement Weather Procedures

at Queen Anne's County Public Schools

90-Minute Delayed Opening

  • Before-school activities at schools, including practices, performances, clubs, and athletic events, are canceled
  • Field trips are permitted to depart after the 90-minute delay

The following employees report to work 30 minutes before students’ scheduled arrival time at school:

  • Certified Unit I – 10-month employees (Teachers)
  • Certified Unit II – 11-month employees
  • Support Unit I – Nurses, Secretaries, School Assistants and all other 207 & 215 day employees

The following employees report to work 60 minutes after their regular start time:

  • Non School-Based Unit Members

The following employees shall report to work on time or at the direction of their supervisor:

  • Emergency / Essential Employees: 
    • Support Unit II (Lead Custodians, Custodians I, Custodians II, Maintenance, Driver Trainers)
    • Support Unit III (Maintenance Foreman, Custodian Foreman)
  • All Emergency / Essential Employees are expected to work their entire shift unless otherwise authorized by the Maintenance or Custodial Foreman

  • After-school activities at schools, including practices, performances, clubs, and athletic events, are canceled
  • Any field trips in progress will be notified to report back to their home school immediately

The following employees shall be permitted to leave work 15 minutes after the last school bus is dismissed, provided that there is available coverage by administration for any students who remain in the building:

  • Certified Unit I – 10-month employees (Teachers)
  • Certified Unit II – 11-month employees
  • Support Unit I – Nurses, Secretaries, School Assistants and all other 207 & 215 day employees

The following employees shall be permitted to leave work 15 minutes after the last school bus is dismissed:

  • Non School-Based Unit Members

The following employees shall report to work on time or at the direction of their supervisor:

  • Emergency / Essential Employees: 
    • Support Unit II (Lead Custodians, Custodians I, Custodians II, Maintenance, Driver Trainers)
    • Support Unit III (Maintenance Foreman, Custodian Foreman)
  • All Emergency / Essential Employees are expected to work their entire shift unless otherwise authorized by the Maintenance or Custodial Foreman
  • Reporting times for 2nd Shift Custodians will be established by the Custodian Foreman, who will advise the Lead Custodian at each site

Code Blue with Liberal Leave – All Schools Closed

  • All schools in Queen Anne’s County will be closed for the day
  • Central and school offices will remain open
  • Employees with Annual Leave may use their leave on this day without securing prior approval
    • QACPS is not responsible for an employee’s commute to and from work, or his/her decision to do so. It is the employee’s decision whether or not he/she can safely report to work. Employees who choose not to report must notify their supervisor.
    • Emergency / Essential Personnel may not use leave during inclement weather closings.
    • If the Central and Satellite offices close at or before 12:00 PM, employees who choose not to report for work shall be required to use a half-day of leave.
    • If the Central and Satellite offices close after 12:00 PM, employees who choose not to report for work shall be required to use a full day of leave.
    • Employees without an annual leave balance who choose not to report will not be paid.
  • All school activities, including after-school and evening activities, are canceled

The following employees do not report to work:

  • Certified Unit I – 10-month employees (Teachers)
  • Certified Unit II – 11-month employees
  • Support Unit I – Nurses, Secretaries, School Assistants and all other 207 & 215 day employees
  • Support Unit II – County Bus Drivers

The following employees shall report to work on time or at the discretion of their supervisor:

  • Emergency / Essential Employees: 
    • Support Unit II (Lead Custodians, Custodians I, Custodians II, Maintenance, Driver Trainers)
    • Support Unit III (Maintenance Foreman, Custodian Foreman)
  • All Emergency / Essential Employees are expected to work their entire shift unless otherwise authorized by the Maintenance or Custodial Foreman
  • Reporting times for 2nd Shift Custodians will be established by the Custodian Foreman, who will advise the Lead Custodian at each site
  • Emergency / Essential Personnel may not use leave during inclement weather closings
    • Emergency / Essential Personnel who do not report to work will be coded and charged with a full day of “unauthorized leave without pay.” 
    • If an Emergency / Essential employee is sick, they must provide verification from a medical provider in order to be coded for an authorized “sick leave” day
    • Pre-approved leave is excluded from this directive

All other employees shall report to their job assignments as soon as possible, but not later than one hour after the usual reporting time.

Code Red – All Schools, School Offices, and Central Office Closed

  • All public schools, school offices, and central offices are closed
  • All school and evening activities are canceled
