Sudlersville, MD – Sudlersville Middle School was buzzing with excitement as families gathered for “Wake Up with STEAM,” a morning event that combined a delicious breakfast with hands-on science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) activities. The event offered a warm welcome to the new school year and gave students and families an opportunity to connect with teachers and the new principal in a fun and engaging environment.

Students and their families explored a variety of exciting STEAM stations, including making lava lamps, crafting jumping origami frogs, experimenting with “elephant toothpaste,” creating homemade playdough, and building houses strong enough to protect the three little pigs. Laughter and learning filled the air as children collaborated with their peers and parents, sparking creativity and curiosity.

The Family Center of Queen Anne’s County also joined the event, providing age-appropriate gifts and a play space for the youngest children in attendance, ensuring that every member of the family could participate.

“This event was a perfect example of the power of community, curiosity, and connection,” said Dr. Billie Brice, the new principal of Sudlersville Middle School. “It was wonderful to see the community come together to learn, laugh, and explore. I’m excited to build on this momentum and continue creating a school environment where students thrive and families feel welcome.”

The event was organized by Kristian Baker, the Family Engagement Coordinator, and Jennifer Geoffroy, the district reading specialist, who emphasized the importance of literacy and STEAM working hand-in-hand.

“We designed ‘Wake Up with STEAM’ to be a joyful experience that highlights student learning,” said Mrs. Geoffroy. “When students are excited to learn and families feel connected to the school, amazing things can happen.”

“Wake Up with STEAM” was more than just a morning of fun—it was a meaningful step toward building strong partnerships between home and school while fostering a love for learning.
