Scheduling
Scheduling classes can be tricky, but we’ve created a video to help you understand the process. You can also work with your Counselor to ensure your schedule meets your academic goals.
Naviance is used in all School Counseling Classroom Lessons and also houses the following information:

- Calendar for College Admissions Representatives visiting KIHS
Local scholarship information is posted to Naviance with links for scholarship applications. Peak Scholarship time is December-March.
Logging into Naviance
Students should use their 5 digit computer IDS and their school-issued password.
Dual Enrollment
KIHS students have the opportunity to take college-level courses while still in high school via our Dual Enrollment program. QACPS has agreements with Chesapeake College, Anne Arundel College, and Washington College for Dual Enrollment courses. Additional information is available on the QACPS website.

Common Terms & Definitions
ACT – A standardized test used in college admissions. Students may choose to take this test instead of in addition to the SAT. The test covers four skill areas: English, Math, Reading and Science Reasoning. Scores range from 1 to 36 with 1 being low and your composite score is an average of your score in the 4 areas.
Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT) – A shorter version of the SAT designed to help students prepare for it and to qualify for the specific national scholarships. The PSAT must be taken in the 11th grade to qualify for the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.
AP (Advanced Placement Program) – These courses give students the opportunity to pursue college level studies while in high school. AP exams are taken in May and are graded on a scores of 4 & 5 usually earning college credit. See each college website for their policy on APs.
SAT – A college admissions test. Students may choose to take it instead of or in addition to the ACT.
Common Application – The Common Application (Common App) makes it possible for students to use one admissions application to apply to hundreds of universities.
Demonstrated Need – A family’s demonstrated need is the difference between the cost of a total year at the university (tuition, room & board, and personal expenses) and the expected family contribution.
Work-Study Program – Work study allows students to earn money to cover part of their college expenses.l Students usually work 8-12 hours/week on campus as part of this subsidized program.
Candidates’ Reply Date – May 1st is the day you confirm your enrollment in a college for the following fall. You secure your place with a non-refundable deposit.
Deferred Admission – Is a delay of an admissions decision until a later time. If your Early Decision/ Early Action application is deferred it means your application will be reviewed again during the Regular Action process.
Deferred Enrollment – This option, initiated at the student’s request, allows students to postpone enrollment at a college for one year. The student may take the year to travel, work or pursue other projects before attending college.
Early Action – Is a non-binding application process

Use this form to request a transcript. Normal processing time is 2-3 days and may take longer during certain times of the year. A fee of $1.00 is required at the time of your request.
